Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes donates work to ClientEarth

Beatriz Milhazes’ painting Cebola Roxa (detail above) was auctioned today as part of Christie’s collaboration with Gallery Climate Coalition: Artists For ClientEarth. The project raises funds from within the art sector to tackle climate change. ClientEarth's mission resonates strongly with Milhazes' practice, which is fuelled by a deep love of nature.

Beatriz Milhazes said:

ClientEarth works with great respect within each situation, whether conserving the forests or fighting to stop coal-fired power stations, local communities are always at the heart of their work. This is essential action that needs support.

ClientEarth CEO James Thornton said: “This is a phenomenal gift from Beatriz Milhazes. Our lawyers are throwing everything they’ve got at tackling the climate crisis and protecting nature. This sale and the preceding Artists for ClientEarth auctions give them the support needed to think creatively and to bring the innovative challenges that count, in their fight to protect the planet and all who live on it.

“Thank you to Beatriz Milhazes and to White Cube for their generosity. To Daniela Gareh for her help. And the whole team at ClientEarth thanks everybody at Gallery Climate Coalition and the team at Christie’s for their continued support.”

James Thornton added: We’re delighted to work so closely with all those involved in the Gallery Climate Coalition – Thomas Dane and Victoria Sidall - and with Christie’s Cristian Albu and Stefanie Garcia. To see the system-changing power of law and the culture-changing power of art working in concert is truly heartening.”

The sale of Milhazes’ work follows auctions by Cecily Brown, Rashid Johnson, Xie Nanxing and Antony Gormley, auctioned at Christie’s London, New York and Hong Kong over the past 18 months.
