Antony Gormley supports Artists for ClientEarth

ClientEarth CEO James Thornton said: “This remarkable gift from Antony Gormley is a major boost to our work tackling climate change and protecting  nature.

"Since the ‘Artists for ClientEarth’  auction series started, we, along with our partners, have continued our fight against dirty coal throughout Europe, scaled up our community forestry work in Southeast Asia, and are currently suing the UK government for its inadequate net zero plans.

Antony Gormley said: “The law must be enforced and strengthened in order to protect what we have always taken for granted: the creatures, plants, and people on which the future of the planet relies. I am delighted to be supporting ClientEarth in all its tenacious, vital work.”

Gormley’s sculpture resembles tree roots, and vividly evokes our central theme: the interconnection and interaction between the natural and man-made worlds. Standing two metres high and cast in iron—the Earth’s core material—the work conjures a plant-like system of antennae, tendrils and branches, which proliferate into a bodily structure.

James Thornton added: “At ClientEarth we are delighted to work so closely with the art world to tackle climate change. Art’s power to change minds is a pivotal driver of meaningful action on the great environmental crises we must tackle together.”

The sale of Gormley’s Root follows record-breaking auctions by Cecily Brown, Rashid Johnson and Xie Nanxing auctioned at Christie’s London, New York and Hong Kong last year. The next work scheduled to be sold under the ‘Artists For ClientEarth’ banner will be a painting by Beatriz Milhazes in an upcoming 21st century evening sale.
