Soledad Gallego joined ClientEarth in June 2019. She works to improve the implementation and enforcement of laws that protect habitats and species, especially in the Mediterranean countries within the EU, identifying strategic legal interventions to protect wildlife.
Before joining ClientEarth, Soledad worked as a Lawyer for SEO/Birdlife, the Spanish partner of BirdLife International, between 2007 and 2019, winning important environmental cases before the Spanish Supreme Court and others. She also provided legal advice and representation for other NGOs through Environmental Justice, Legal Office, which she founded in 2008. Previously, she held the positions of General Director of Housing, Water and Town Planning in the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, between 2002 and 2005.
Soledad has researched and published extensively on the Natura 2000 Network, conservation of biodiversity, water policy, ecological flows in rivers and climate change, among other topics. She has contributed to create and coordinate a network of NGOs and citizen groups in Spain and Portugal to protect the Tagus River and its tributaries.
She was admitted to the Bar of Albacete (Castilla-La Mancha) in 1995 and to the Bar of Madrid in 2006.
