The urgent need for bold green investment in the UK
In response to the Labour Party scaling back on its £28 billion green investment plan, ClientEarth CEO Laura Clarke said:
“The UK needs large-scale investment in measures that can address both the climate emergency and the cost of living crisis, and it needs it urgently.
“We need to see a ramping up of ambition, investing in green measures that will create jobs, bring down household energy bills, keep families warm – and ensure the UK remains globally competitive.
“Politicians of all stripes need to back measures – like more support for renewables and home retrofits and insulation – that are popular with the public and will have a real climate impact as the world approaches 1.5C of further warming.
“Our lawyers are currently challenging the current UK government in court, again, over its inadequate climate plans. Whichever party next finds itself in power must not walk back on existing and legally binding climate commitments.
“Otherwise it risks the UK falling even further behind on the global energy transition, losing out on green jobs, and failing UK households struggling with the expensive and deadly reliance on fossil fuels.”
