Many countries are standing up and making commitments to tackle plastics pollution. Earlier this year, the EU joined in with its Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy.
The Strategy promised to make all plastic packaging recyclable by 2030 and put a lot of emphasis on recycling. It also included 'extended producer responsibility’ schemes, where a producer has certain obligations for a product once a consumer is finished with it and it becomes waste.
While the ambition in the Strategy should be applauded, more urgent action is needed to curb the production of plastics in Europe.
