Entered into force on 1 December 2013, the Voluntary Partnership Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Liberia on forest law enforcement, governance and trade in timber products to the European Union, provides a legal framework to ensure that all imports into the European Union from Liberia of timber products have been legally produced and to promote trade in timber products. It establishes a Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade Licensing Scheme (FLEGT) between the parties which involves a set of procedures and requirements aiming at verifying and attesting that timber products shipped to the Union were legally produced or acquired.
