Request for an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice

On 29 March 2023, the UN General Assembly voted to request an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on the obligations of States in respect of climate change. You can read more on this request here (link to: What is the Vanuatu ICJ initiative? | ClientEarth). The first round of written submissions was due in March 2024. In advance of the deadline of the second round of written submissions and the subsequent oral proceedings, this legal briefing analyses the two questions before the Court, with a particular focus on the legal obligations on States under international human rights and international climate law and the subsequent legal consequences where breaches have occurred.
