Greece intends to implement a new capacity mechanism, which would provide long term subsidies to fossil fuel plants. ClientEarth has made submissions to the European Commission (DG COMP), which is assessing whether the mechanism is compatible with State aid law. We argue that Greece has not demonstrated any need for these subsidies, and that if it is implemented, the scheme needs to be much less biased towards fossil fuels and much more open to low carbon technologies.
