Letter from ClientEarth to UK Environment Secretary on Defra’s consultation on environmental targets

This is a letter written by ClientEarth's Head of UK, Kyle Lischack, to the UK's Secretary of State for Environment, George Eustice. The letter makes clear our concerns about Defra’s consultation on environmental targets, which opened on 16th March 2022 and closes on 11th May 2022.

It highlights two major points of concern about the way in which the consultation is being run:

• It lacks critical information to enable a properly informed consultee response
• It is of insufficient length in terms of the consultation period prescribed

In addition, the policy statement on environmental principles required by the Act is still evolving and unfinished, despite it being intended by Parliament to play a key role in informing government policies that affect the environment, including these important long-term environmental targets.
