In this joint NGO position paper ClientEarth, Marine Conservation Society and WWF present key recommendations for the UK government and devolved administrations regarding the implementation of the landing obligation in 2019. These recommendations were sent to the ministries in all devolved administrations. We highlight the risks that non-compliance with the landing obligation poses for the sustainability of UK fisheries, and present recommendations for how these risks should be addressed. Amongst others, reliable and comprehensive monitoring and control play a key role in this context, in order to ensure that the landing obligation can fulfill its purpose of minimising unwanted catches and eliminating wasteful discards.
