The Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) Regulation is vital to preserving the long-term sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture, to contributing to the protection of the marine environment and the availability of food supplies, and to providing a fair standard of living for fisheries and aquaculture communities.
According to ClientEarth’s assessment, the CFP Regulation can be – if well implemented – effective in meeting its objectives; efficient and proportionate in terms of cost-benefit; relevant to addressing the current and emerging needs; coherent with other EU actions; and can add value beyond what would have been achieved by EU Member States alone.
Implementation, control and enforcement of the existing instruments of the CFP and its related laws and policies – not revising the CFP – will be key to delivering the EU’s transition to sustainable fisheries, as outlined in this response to the CFP evaluation.
