Maria Kleis-Walravens joined ClientEarth in March 2014 to lead our state aid and energy work. She is based in Brussels and is now ClientEarth’s Head of Energy Systems.

Experience

Before joining ClientEarth she worked as the EU Liaison for the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP). She also gained her state aid expertise working several years at the European Institute for Public Administration. Earlier work experience includes a position as a legal adviser on European competition law at the German law firm Beiten Burkhardt in Brussels, consultancy work for the International Labour Organisation, and an internship with the United Nations.

Education

Maria holds a DEA in public international law from the Institute de Hautes Etudes Internationales in Geneva (CH), and an LL.M in EU Law, Dutch law, and comparative law from the University of Maastricht.

I like the challenge of using the legal possibilities offered by the EU State aid regime to remove barriers to the creation of a sustainable and decarbonised EU power market. That’s why I work at ClientEarth.
