The International Court of Justice's July 2025 landmark Advisory Opinion on climate provided unprecedented clarity on State obligations under international law. It has significant legal effects in providing a roadmap that sets the direction of climate action and is already impacting subsequent court rulings.
As the geopolitical landscape shifts, the impact of climate litigation will be found well beyond courtrooms. The rulings from international courts sit within a fragmenting landscape for post-World War II multilateral systems, raising questions about the future of international courts and the post-war UN architecture that has supported them for eight decades.
Bringing together leading voices from international law, UN reform, and climate diplomacy, this session will explore how climate justice is reshaping global governance, and what must come next as multilateralism adopts to a new geopolitical reality.
