ClientEarth calls for credible adaptation plan amidst Climate Change Committee warning

15 October 2025

The UK Government's independent advisors on Climate Change, the Climate Change Committee, has today issued a warning to the Government about lack of preparation for a world where climate change is increasingly driving extreme weather events.

Emma Howard Boyd, Chair of ClientEarth's Global Board backs their call for urgent action:

“The Climate Change Committee’s advice should be a turning point. Britain is still dangerously underprepared for the climate impacts already battering our communities and this government has a real opportunity to put that right: by taking adaptation seriously; setting measurable goals; and holding departments to account.

“Heatwaves, floods, droughts and coastal erosion are already affecting homes, health and livelihoods across the UK - from coastal communities to farmers facing failing harvests. As long as we have insufficient adaptation plans, our resilience, from food to power, is at the mercy of an increasingly unpredictable climate. Without serious investment in adaptation, the question is not if citizens will demand accountability, but when.”

“It’s heartening to see the government take this topic seriously and ask for independent advice under the Climate Change Act. The CCC has set out clear advice on the objectives needed to prepare for a world where global warming could reach 2°C by 2050 - and where 4°C by the end of the century cannot yet be ruled out. The next step is to turn that advice into measurable targets, clear accountability, and a credible plan that protects people, nature and the economy. The public is ready for action that matches the scale of the challenge - now it’s time for this Government to prove they are too.”
