Open Letter to European Commission President von der Leyen on the adoption of the Sustainable Food Systems Law in the next mandate

Food system transformation must be a core priority for the next European Commission.

To encourage future policymakers to keep up the momentum to shift towards a sustainable food system in the EU, organisations from the EU Food Policy Coalition sent a request for meeting to Ursula von der Leyen, highlighting that:

  • The next EU Commission should make the transition to sustainable food systems a high political priority;
  • The recent responses to farmers' protests - shortsighted measures rolling back sustainability policies - will fail to guarantee fairer prices for farmers and a viable future. The next European Commission must lay down a vision for making the EU food system sustainable and resilient, accompanied by clear objectives and actionable tools ;
  • The upcoming Strategic Dialogue can be used to build a consensus on creating this vision through policy, using science as its starting point.
