Joint NGO statement on the REPowerEU legislative proposal

Joint statement by ClientEarth, EuroNature and the Green10, the largest network of environmental organisations in Europe, calling for the accelerated deployment of renewable technologies in compliance with existing environmental legislation. We urge EU policymakers to use this legislative proposal to improve existing permitting procedures in order to allow the EU to swiftly and efficiently transition to renewable technologies. Any such improvements will guide the conservation of the environment and the principles of inclusive and participatory governance. To that end, the proposal will not weaken the rule of law, deregulate existing environmental protections or limit the public’s right to participate in environmental decision-making in any way, as such approaches would simply hinder the deployment of renewables, by causing legal uncertainty, trigger lengthy and costly litigation processes for developers, while simultaneously critically affecting the EU’s ability to tackle the biodiversity and climate crises in a coordinated manner.
