Additional comments to RAC on the biodegradability exemption proposed in the restriction on intentionally added microplastic

ClientEarth and ECOS submitted additional comments to the public consultation organised by the European Chemical Agency regarding the proposal to restrict microplastics (intentionally added). This contribution focuses on the exemption proposed for ‘biodegradable’ microplastics. For this restriction to be effective in limiting the ‘stock’ of microplastics in the environment, no exemption based on alleged ‘biodegradability’ should be included at this stage, in light of the current scientific knowledge.
