The 2009 Community Rights Act intends to empower communities to fully engage in the sustainable management of the forests of Liberia. The Act defines the rights and responsibilities of communities to own, manage, use and benefit from forest resources whether by customary, statutory or other tenure systems and aims at establishing mechanisms to promote informed and representative community participation in matters related to as community forest resources. According to the Act, the FDA is responsible for the observance of the principles of fair and sustainable management of forest resources.
