The proposed EU law on deforestation-free products: how does it compare to the EUTR framework?

The European Commission’s proposal for an EU Regulation on deforestation-free products, published on 17 November 2021, integrates and repeals the EU Timber Regulation. It is a flagship initiative under the European Green Deal and represents a significant development as part of the EU’s commitment to address deforestation and forest degradation.

In this Briefing, ClientEarth has analysed the provisions of the Proposal to see how it compares to the existing EUTR framework, to assess their practical impact and to identify what further improvements could be made in the next stages of the EU’s law-making process.
