Public pressure during the reform of Europe’s fisheries management law showed that citizens want an end to wasteful fishing practices. The new European Common Fisheries Policy is a huge step towards this. However, it’s essential that key legal measures are implemented and enforced effectively with quotas set at sustainable, precautionary levels based on the available science; ending discards; developing long-term regional management plans and improving the collection and reporting of scientific data.
