EU law and endocrine disruptors: a lot remains to be done to prevent harm

EU law today is insufficient to prevent the damage to our health and the environment that exposure to chemicals and most specifically endocrine disruptors can cause.

Speaking to the European Parliament today, ClientEarth chemicals lawyer Alice Bernard, said that more needs to be done to identify and ban these chemicals before the expiration of the EU 7th Environment Action Programme in 2020.

Endocrine disruptors (EDCs) are chemicals that mimic, block, or interfere with the hormones of humans or animals disrupting the proper functioning of the hormonal system. They have been associated with a wide range of health issues including cancer, infertility as well as diabetes, neurodevelopment problems, adverse effect on the immune system and many others.
