Ida Westphal joined the German office in Berlin in October 2018 as an energy transition lawyer. At ClientEarth, Ida’s work focuses on promoting the coal phase-out in Germany from a legal perspective.


Prior to joining ClientEarth, she developed a project on open source licenses for seeds as a Mercator Fellow on International Affairs, a programme for young professionals. As part of her fellowship, she worked at the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) and Bioversity International.


Ida is a German lawyer and specialized in environmental law. She gained professional experience as a researcher in the field of environmental law governance at the German Institute for Applied Ecology (Öko-Institut e.V.) and was a legal trainee at the environmental law firm Gaßner, Groth, Siederer & Coll. Ida also holds a combined LLB (licence en droit) in German and French law. Her professional interest lies in the field of environmental law, agriculture and human rights.
