Esmée Fairbairn Foundation is one of the largest independent grant-making foundations in the UK:
"We make grants to organisations which aim to improve the quality of life for people and communities in the UK, both now and in the future."
We like to consider work which others may find hard to fund, perhaps because it breaks new ground, appears too risky, requires core funding, or needs a more unusual form of financial help such as a loan. We also take initiatives ourselves where new thinking is required or where we believe there are important unexplored opportunities."

McIntosh Foundation
The McIntosh Foundation is the founding funder of ClientEarth.
The Foundation was created in 1949 by Allan and Josephine McIntosh, as a vehicle for their personal charitable giving. When a large amount of stock in the A&P grocery chain, the company founded by Josephine's grandfather, was left to the Foundation in 1971 through her will, a permanent endowment was created for the Foundation. It then became the formal institution that has grown and changed over the ensuing years, primarily through the vision and passion of Michael McIntosh, its current chair and president.
"In business terms, we view our grant program as a venture capital approach towards societal improvements. We take risks. Not all grants are successful, and that is okay. [...] We feel that is one of the greatest strengths of a family-controlled foundation - the ability to be an entrepreneur, an innovator, a visionary, a support-line to the community. We wanted to demonstrate that a proactive strategic grantmaking program that uses long-term vision, not short-term grantmaking, is a viable method for managing a small foundation."

Oak Foundation

The foundation's Environment Climate Change Programme involves addressing global climate change by advocating for renewable energy and energy efficiency in the power and transport sectors through education, research, and policy change in Europe, Canada, and the Northeastern United States.
