Sandy Luk is an environmental lawyer who has specialised in environmental legal policy and heads up ClientEarth’s biodiversity programme.

On the marine side, her main focus is currently on the 2012 reform of the EU Common Fisheries Policy, although her work comprises a wide range of other biodiversity, fisheries and marine related matters (for example whaling, oil drilling, environmental impact assessments) and other cross-cutting environmental law issues (such as access to justice and environmental liability).
After obtaining her LLM at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London (SOAS) she worked at a number of London City law firms in environmental, corporate and commercial departments and in-house as a regulation/environmental law solicitor at Anglian Water.

Since 2001 Sandy has worked almost exclusively for public interest organisations.
Sandy thrives on the challenge of using the law creatively as a tool to bring about change and protect the environment, and she enjoys trying to make complex legal issues accessible and relevant to wider audiences.

As regards ClientEarth’s CFP Reform work, ClientEarth and the Marine Conservation Society are jointly proposing an alternative approach to fisheries management which they have called the ‘Fishing Credits System’ or FCS for short. The FCS aims to achieve ecological sustainability for fisheries, but it is also simple and easy to apply for fishers and seeks to secure the long-term survival and profitability of fisheries by taking a sustainable, yet practical, approach based on science and law.
