Businesses have massive impacts on the environment, and on peoples' environmental and other rights, the world over.  There are serious gaps in the accountability of companies for their impacts, and major challenges are faced in changing the behaviour of companies for the better.

Company law allows companies to exist, and defines the way that companies work.  In public companies in particular – where the people who run the company aren't the people who own it – company law determines the rights and relationships at the heart of the way that those companies act and think, and the impacts that they have on the environment and people.
