Climate & forests
Tropical forests cover 19 million km² of the planet and store 120-400 tonnes of carbon/hectare – a quarter of the carbon sequestered on land. During recent years, 130,000 km² of tropical forests (an area the size of England) have been destroyed annually.

When forests are destroyed, the carbon stored in the trees, roots, and surrounding soil is released into the atmosphere.  Greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, particularly from tropical forests, account for approximately 20% of global emissions – more than total EU emissions.
