The increase demand for biofuels in the European Union puts their sustainability into question.

The Renewable Energy Directive and the Fuel Quality Directive require the Commission to report on the production patterns of biofuels and on the impact of the increased demand for biofuels following measures expected to incentivise biofuels, including an assessment of the affordability of food prices and effects on food security, the impact of indirect land-use change and respect of land-use rights, the eradication of poverty, local governance, gender equality, social inclusion, public health, and labour conditions.
