January 2012 | Read the response The UK government consultation on the proposals for new levels of support for renewable electricity closed on 12 January. Under the proposal, large-scale biomass plants would receive about £850m per year in renewable energy subsidies. ClientEarth’s response highlights that current sustainability criteria are inadequate to ensure biomass is sustainable. Within this framework, the significant amounts of biomass that would need to be imported to fuel UK power plants raise concerns about whether the government’s plans for biomass are sustainable. And more importantly, if they will lead to any reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the UK electricity sector. You can read ClientEarth’s response to the consultation questions here.
