Fifty years ago the great Science-Fiction writer Kurt Vonnegut famously wrote:
“There is no reason why good cannot triumph as often as evil. The triumph of anything is a matter of organization. If there are such things as angels, I hope that they are organized along the lines of the Mafia.”

Bearing this thought in mind, it is a great comfort to see the arrival of ClientEarth, a law firm who operate under the simple but revolutionary philosophy that the Earth is their client. I cannot stress enough how brilliant this organization is. When new runways, unabated coal-fired power stations or other environmental monstrosities are proposed, ClientEarth’s team of world-class lawyers are ready and waiting to fight them with every legal tool at their disposal. I think of them as awesome environmental activists who wear business suits and have law degrees.
But ClientEarth do more than just law suits: they also push for more effective environmental legislation to be passed, to prevent foolish decisions from being made before they ever need come to court; their Brussels office works on EU environmental laws, which have a major impact in every EU Member State.
We can all help ClientEarth grow by joining their online membership. For anyone who cares about Earth’s future, joining up is perhaps the most effective (and easiest) way to take action. I really think you ought to click here to join now. Donations are obviously welcome, but membership is free. With a thriving international membership, ClientEarth can make the strongest legal case for protecting the environment and can bring law suits in more countries, so sign up now and I suggest that you tell all your friends to do the same.
I’m honoured to have been asked to join their team of bloggers: over the coming months we’ll be sharing our thoughts and keeping you updated on this pivotal work from the environmental movement’s own law firm.
