ClientEarth and bluefin tuna ![]() photo: nialkennedy The Mediterranean Sea is one of the two areas of the Atlantic where bluefin tuna is caught. Over 50 per cent of the bluefin caught in the Mediterranean is caught by EU vessels. Fishing for bluefin tuna is regulated at international level by the International Commission for the Convention of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). The EU speaks on behalf of European Member States during ICCAT negotiations and is an influential member of ICCAT. Working with other NGOs involved in campaigning for greater protection for bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean, ClientEarth has provided legal advice setting out legal obligations binding on the EU that should require the EU to take action to secure a high level of protection for bluefin tuna. Ahead of a meeting of ICCAT in November 2010 ClientEarth prepared a detailed briefing setting out legal obligations contained in EU and international law that should influence the EU’s position at the ICCAT meeting. You can read our legal briefing here. We also produced a legal briefing setting out ways in which the EU’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive requires the EU to seek protection for bluefin tuna. You can read this briefing here. We continue to develop our work on bluefin tuna in the context of our marine programme.
