April 2011 | Read the report This report, prepared by ClientEarth for BirdLife International, ActionAid and Nature Kenya, finds that current plans to produce biofuels on ancient coastal forest in Dakatcha, Kenya, would breach the sustainability criteria contained in the EU's Renewable Energy Directive. Together with an analysis of greenhouse gas emissions from the proposed project, the report shows that biofuels from Dakatcha would be incapable of meeting standards on emissions savings and biodiversity protection. These standards were developed by the EU to prevent its renewable energy targets driving the destruction of key nature protection areas, and high carbon stock lands. The Dakatcha case is one of the first real tests of whether the sustainability standards will do their job.
