The Fishing credits system: an industry guide

We believe very strongly and passionately in a sustainable future for EU fisheries, but the European Union's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is failing. It is time for a completely new approach. That is why ClientEarth and the Marine Conservation Society are proposing a different way of managing fisheries under the CFP, which we call the Fishing Credits System (FCS). The FCS has three core goals: simplicity, sustainability and incentivisation.

This legal background paper has been drafted in response to enquiries regarding the EU rules that would apply in the event of an oil spill from an oil rig accident such as the recent BP accident in the Gulf.

It is intended to provide a general overview of some of the main rules which govern oil rigs in the EU, and to identify some of the weaknesses of and gaps in the current EU regulatory framework.
